Connectors that help show results or effects in a cause–effect essay include as a result, for this reason, consequently, and therefore. Some people make purchases for emotional reasons, and this can have negative effects. For instance, people may buy products so that they feel better when they are sad. As a result, they may feel better, but the improvement in mood is likely to last for only a short period of time. Sometimes people buy products to feel important. Consequently, they may spend more money than they have. 2 Read each sentence in the chart, and decide if the words in bold show a reason or a result. Check (✓) the box in the correct column. Advertisements directed at young children are often very effective, but their effects are not always positive. For instance, children want to have products they see even if they do not need them. As a result, they may develop an addiction to unhealthy foods. Consequently, they often bother their parents until their parents buy the products. Therefore, parents and children should discuss the advertisements they see on television.
